One of the first shows out of the gate in the new season was Seth Macfarlane’s The Orville. As a cross between comedy and drama, with a splash of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Orville, managed to capture the optimistic vision of Gene Roddenberry in seven episodes. The latest was one of it’s best Star Trek-like episodes to date.
Apparently FOX wasn’t too sure of how fans would react to The Orville and it didn’t anticipate how much Star Trek Discovery would rub some fans the wrong way. It’s first season is only 13 episodes and was considered as a limited series, or a one shot, but the network’s long-standing relationship with Macfarlane was an important factor in the series renewal and the fact that it got the best ratings of any new Fox show in years helped. This decision makes The Orville one of the first renewals of the fall 2017 season, even as Star Trek Discovery itself gets a second season too!
It looks like classic sci-fi is making a quiet comeback.
