T-Mobile is Buying Sprint for $26 Billion

In a bid to be the first network to carry 5G technology, T-Mobile just announced it’s buying up Sprint.

Included in the deal are the following brands:

  • T-Mobile
  • Sprint
  • MetroPCS
  • Boost Mobile
  • Virgin Mobile

It’s likely the Sprint brand will be absorbed into T-Mobile. This will automatically make T-Mobile (the likely surviving brand) the third wireless carrier, with nearly 100 million users. This puts it within reach of AT&T ( 93 million) and even Verizon (116.2 million). When all is said and done, T-Mobile will likely move into second place, especially if their 5G plans pan out. T-Mobile can use it’s own network and Sprint’s cheap plans to make an alternative choice available. Current T-Mobile CEO John Legere, will remain as CEO under the new company, and he says that the merger will make T-Mobile’s network 30 times stronger than it is now.

But this was just an announcement. The merger will have to go through hurdles at the DOJ and FCC and that itself won’t be finished until 2019. Then the changes may not be finalized well into 2020.
