Hurricane Harvey is one for the record books and should make everyone think twice about Global Warming, but Facebook is helping out Harvey victims much more than its simple safety check feature.
As Hollywood ramps up their own celebrity support, I can’t count how many stories I’ve seen of people getting rescued from Facebook pleas of help or when Facebook gathers together to locate missing individuals or animals and to bring them together. It’s one of the most powerful tools that have been immensely helpful in relief efforts.
It’s the first time social media has been utilized on this scale in the United States. It’s a whole new world now, that people and rescuers alike can respond to demands and requests seamlessly in real-time. When Katrina hit in 2005, Facebook barely was out of Harvard and Twitter didn’t even exist! Now, it’s almost surpassing Emergency Services as random groups of rescuers ban together to hunt down the social media posters to rescue. It’s a good thing the cell phone towers are still operational and were unaffected by the storm!
