Audiences expected to see Jack’s death last night on This is Us, what they didn’t expect was competition from the Cloverfield Franchise…on Netflix. That’s right, Netflix bought the Cloverfield Franchise! Let that sink in.
Netflix released a surprise trailer during the game with no explanation or press before. Rumors started swirling about the Cloverfield trailer earlier during the day and on social media, but no one had seen a picture or a clip of the movie. No one knew the title, and no one knew when it would air. In fact, the industry just learned that Netflix had acquired the film. There are still wonders about if The Cloverfield Paradox will ever hit theaters as it was supposed to in April.
Millennials loved this move from Netflix and considering that 60% of them don’t even have cable to watch This is Us, that means that they immediately went to Netflix to watch the movie after the game. It’s an unprecedented feat of marketing that has never happened before in Hollywood. But movies are usually built around hype especially Cloverfield.
It was the ultimate battle between cord-cutters and traditional TV and I believe that Netflix won this round, but the movie itself is getting mixed reviews.
