Netflix Jumps into Late Night with Joel McHale

David Letterman wasn’t enough. Netflix’s Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale debuted over the weekend. Premiering on Saturday night, The Joel McHale with Joel McHale pokes fun at pop culture and TV and unlike most late night TV talk show hosts, politics was nowhere to be found.

McHale says he’s going to stay away from politics and continue on with his Soup 2.0 success. He bills it as the ultimate global reality show (it’s not live) that makes fun of other reality shows. As Netflix is global The Joel McHale Show will focus more on the international soap opera/reality TV show scene. No one else is doing that. 90% of News, and Late Night is devoted to Donald Trump, who himself was a reality star, but Joel McHale is a one man show, he can’t keep up with all that happens in the White House, and it wouldn’t condense well into a half hour show where you know other stuff is happening in the world.

Netflix also has a chance here to plug and make fun of their own shows. Stranger Things, Luke Cage, Glow, Fuller House, and Love all were bashed. It would be great if Joel McHale used the show to talk about some of the less than popular shows that are on Netflix that people may have forgotten about, or aren’t getting much attention. Of course, I wouldn’t expect him to do that in the very first episode.

Where Jimmy Fallon has failed Joel McHale can shine.
