What can get millennials to stay in the movie theaters? How about a Netflix-like subscription service? That’s exactly what Moviepass CEO Mitch Lowe thinks. He was an executive at Netflix and Redbox, so he kinda knows what he’s talking about.
What it is? A new technology that lets users go to the movie theaters for the flat rate of $10 per month no matter how many movies you see that month. It’s seems too good to be true, but Lowe assures people that the technology works, and it’s not only available but cannot be blocked either.
AMC is the largest movie theater chain in the country, and they aren’t happy about this. They are making a fuss about Moviepass being a small player in the market and that a subscription plan is not in the best interest for moviegoers. This has also led to ridicule from critics who think it’s nothing but a scam.
Lowe assures people that the platform will work and get more people into movie theaters. Note: As of now the pass only works for non-3D/IMAX movies and also not for concessions, but that’s a long-term goal Lowe has for Moviepass.
