Discovery is not shying away from crazy marketing stunts. In it’s latest disappointment, where Michael Phelps sorta raced a Great White Shark, he really didn’t. He did, through simulations.
In an hour long puff piece that has many critics grovelling, Discovery all but admitted to the marketing stunt by the end of the TV special. “Clearly, we can’t put Michael in one lane and a white shark on the far lane. We’re gonna have to do a simulation.”
While some hopeful viewers–people who bought into the marketing hype that Phelps was actually going to race a real shark–were let down, that was obviously not going to happen. The famed olympic champion said as much on the talk show circuit this past week while promoting the special. He wasn’t ACTUALLY going to race a Great White Shark!!! Still it left some wondering what happened, and why Discovery decided to butcher one of the most successful ratings franchises of all time.
Shark Week didn’t need this.
