In the first big flop of the season, the CBS legal drama Doubt is the first freshman show to be cancelled by a broadcast network in the 2016-2017 season. It took a long time to get here, but they did it so fast hardly anybody got a chance to learn about it.
Doubt starred Katherine Heigl and OINTB star Laverne Cox and premiered to a respectable but low for CBS 5 million viewers. After a week, that dropped to 4 Million viewers. The suggestion by industry watchers is that Doubt didn’t quite live up to CBS’ quality programming and the ratings obviously weren’t there either. Still given it’s legal plot it could have found it’s own audience if allowed to continue. Someone may have actually pulled this plug too fast, for anybody to miss.
Doubt will not be the next big legal franchise despite a large marketing budget and a Transgender lead. CBS didn’t like the downward slope it saw.
