ABC Looks To Franchise Comedy Wednesday

ABC’s Comedy Wednesday block is showing it’s age. Spearheaded by the now eight year old Modern Family. All of the shows in the Wednesday night slot have done relatively well for the network. The most popular shows on Wednesday night not including freshman series Speechless are all at least three years old, and they don’t show any signs of slowing down.

Yet, one has to question how much steam Modern Family has left in it. I don’t think I laughed once watching an episode in season 8 and it’s become more of silly drama rather than a comedy. But Modern Family is king in the ratings and it still anchors Comedy Wednesday after all these years. Ending Modern Family after eight years is almost impossible. It will likely end after season 10 so it could become the¬†longest-running single-camera comedy series on U.S. broadcast television.

So when news broke earlier today, that ABC just greenlighted a 1990s Goldberg’s Spinoff featuring the very funny¬†Bryan Callen as Coach Mellor. It’s something that got my attention and he’s a welcome addition to the world of expanded universes. Then I learned that ABC also is working on a Black-ish spin-off as well. It’s interesting to see these two relatively newer additions to ABC’s comedy block get spinoffs even when that rumored Modern Family spin-off never saw the light of day.

The real Adam Goldberg of the Goldbergs says that he wanted to make a TV show that honored the teachers that inspired him. Looks like franchises can’t even escape small production studios like Adam F Goldberg Productions.
